AASU urges GU to hold exams online and offline

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 - The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has urged the Gauhati University to hold both online and offline open book examination for the undergraduate and postgraduate students in view of the COVID-19 situation.

An AASU delegation led by its president Dipanka Kumar Nath today met the GU Vice Chancellor Professor Pratap Jyoti Handique and requested him to take measures for holding the examination in both online and offline modes for convenience of all the students of the GU main campus as well as those studying in nearly 400 colleges affiliated to it.

Recently, the Gauhati University initiated the process of holding the final semester examination for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. While we welcome this move of the university, we have also noticed that the only option of offline method has caused anxiety among the students and their parents, the student body said.

The AASU team said that in view of the increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases in the entire State including Guwahati, providing just offline option may create problems for many students. On the other hand, only online examination cannot be an option either, because many students do not have the requisite infrastructure for taking the exams online, it added.

As such, we request the GU authorities to adopt a mixed way of holding the examination through both online and offline modes. The students can appear in the open book examination with the same question papers as per their convenience as a one-time measure in view of present extraordinary situation, the AASU president added.

On the other hand, the Gauhati University has sounded alert against a fake notice in the name of the Controller of Examination. The notice has been circulated in the media informing about postponement of the BA/BSc final examinations.

The GU authority stated that no such notice has originated from the Controller of Examination, GU and that all examination dates as notified earlier stand valid. It cautioned the students and other stakeholders that any notice, which does not originate from the GU website (at https:// gauhati.ac.in) is fake.
