AASU stir over Accord, NRC

DIBRUGARH, Aug 10 � In response to the statewide satygraha called by the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) in protest against government�s failure to implement the Assam Accord and suspending the updating process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and other issues, the All Dibrugarh District Students� Union today staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here.

About two hundred students marched from Chowkidinghee to the DC�s office with placards and banners, demanding immediate implementation of the historic Accord and resumption of updating the NRC in the entire state. The students later submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the district administration. The students� body has also demanded protection of Majuli river island from erosion and called for a halt to all dam construction works in Arunchal Pradesh.

Jorhat Correspondent adds: Jorhat district committee of All Assam Students� Union today took out a massive protest rally which blocked the convoy of the Health Minister of Assam, Himanta Bishwa Sarma for about half an hour, when he was returning from Jorhat Medical College and Hospital where he had gone to take part in a function organised to welcome the first batch of JMC students at Jorhat District Library at 11 am today.

The AASU activists submitted a memorandum to Jorhat DC addressed to the Prime Minister demanding intervention in the burning issues of the state like continuation of NRC update, protection of Majuli, stopping the big dam projects and implementation of the Assam Accord.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, general secretary, AASU Jorhat district unit, said that the present Congress government at Dispur had suppressed the democratic agitational programmes by using brutal force. He also said that AASU would take to more vigorous agitational programmes if the government failed to fulfill its demands.

Tinsukia Correspondent adds: The Tinsukia District Students� Union took out a massive rally in Tinsukia town today in protest against construction of big dams in hilly catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh threatening the very existence of various parts of Assam, apathy in taking measures in respect of flood and erosion including protection of river island Majuli from erosion and most importantly, against the halt to the update process of the National Register of Citizens in the State.

Thousands of people including members of various organisations, political parties and students participated in the rally.

The programme was part of the agitational programmes resirted to by the All Assam Students� Union all over the State. The rally that started from Tinsukia College and culminated at Zero Point (Thana Chariali), passed through Chirapatty Road, AT Road, and GNB Road. Leaders of various organisations addressed the gathering.
