DHEMAJI, Aug 23 - Demanding a quick inquiry into the alleged mismanagement of funds meant for various development schemes to be executed by the Demaji Town Committee, the Dhemaji anchalik unit of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged a two-hour sit-in demonstration in front of the Swahid Smriti Bhawan at Dhemaji Tiniali here on August 18, from 12 noon to 2 pm.

More than 100 members of the student body joined the demonstration, demanding action by higher authorities to check the irregularities in the affairs of the Town Committee.

The agitators also held a protest meeting on the spot where the student leaders vehemently criticised the activities of the Dhemaji Town Committee.

The student leaders alleged that lakhs of rupees have been embezzled in the name of implementation of various schemes such as Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantree Awas Yojana (PMAY), pension for the elderly etc., by the Town Committee since 2016.

They further denounced that the Town Committee, which was formed in 1977, has miserably failed to take any fruitful schemes for the development of the town.

The student leaders criticised the Town Committee for failing to install adequate number of streetlights and construct a proper drainage system in the town.

The student leaders alleged that rampant irregularities have been committed by the Town Committee in the form of collection of tax from the houses, shops and business establishments, daily and weekly markets and vehicle owners in the town.

The agitators demanded an inquiry into all these irregularities and submitted a memorandum in this regard.
