AASU slams govt for failing to protect scribes

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Nov 13 - All Assam Students Union (AASU) today slammed Sarbananda Sonowal-led State government for failing to provide security to mediapersons and the general public in the State.

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that it is a sad state of affairs that journalists are not safe under the Sonowal-led government. Referring to the death of senior journalist Parag Bhuyan of Kakopathar in Tinsukia district, who was knocked down on Wednesday night by a moving vehicle, AASU general secretary said that Sonowal-led government has failed in its duty to protect mediapersons and the people at large. When people have alleged that it could be a case of murder as the deceased journalist exposed corruption in the area through his journalistic practises, the government must institute a high-level enquiry, unearth the truth and punish all those guilty, he said.

The AASU leader further said that the Chief Minister was losing his hold over the administration and the police. A police officer on duty is attacked inside the police station and the Sonowal-led government is yet to nail the culprits. Sonowal-led government often appears to provide political shield to some while mediapersons and the general people lack security, he said and added that the State is seeing the old days of terror when mass killings took place during the previous governments led by Hiteswar Saikia and later by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
