AASU protest over Silapathar violence

GUWAHATI, March 10 - People in thousands took to the streets of the State today in response to the call given by All Assam Students� Union (AASU) for staging Satyagraha in protest against the March 6 Silapathar incident. Thousands of people took part in the Satyagraha at the district headquarters all over the State to register their protest against the March 6 incident.

The participants of the Satyagraha demanded repeal of the decision to impose the post-1971 Bangla migrants on Assam, permanent solution to the aliens� problem by implementing the Assam Accord and immediate arrest of those involved in the March 6 Silapathar incident.

The organisations of the ethnic groups and other Indian communities living in the State also took part in the programme.

In the city, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya led the Satyagraha participants, who included members of the women organisations, employees� organisations, other national organisations, ethnic organisations, organisations of the other Indian communities, students and youths, among others. They demanded that the status of the Assamese people should not be demeaned in their native place. Besides, they also called for urgent steps to arrest and punish those involved in the Silapathar incident.

AASU said in a statement here this evening that its agitation would continue until the demands are fulfilled. The prime accused in the Silapathar incident should be arrested and punished in an exemplary manner, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 should be repealed and the Assam Accord should be implemented in its letter and spirit, said the students� body.

The students� body will hold a meeting in the city on March 17 with 28 organisations of the State�s ethnic groups to chalk out its future course of action, it said in the statement.
