AASU observes �Unity Day�

GUWAHATI, June 10 - The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today observed Chhatra Samhati Diwas to celebrate students� unity and integrity and remember the martyrs of the students� movement of 1974 in Assam.

Samhati Diwas or �Unity Day� is observed on June 10 every year to pay tribute to the martyrs of AASU�s movement on food and economy-related issues in 1974. AASU activists Gajen Ingti and Putul Saikia laid down their lives in police firing in Morigaon on June 10 during the movement.

All district, sub-divisional and regional units of AASU organised tribute programmes in their respective areas on the occasion. AASU reiterated its pledge to raise the issues concerning the welfare of the State and its people.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and chief advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya paid tribute to the martyrs on the occasion. In Guwahati, the day was observed by the All Guwahati Students� Union with a daylong programme in the Nehru Park here.

The AGSU programme was initiated by student leaders Rajmil Ali, Simanta Thakuria, Tapan Kalita and Kush Rongpi. Students from different educational institutions of Guwahati took part in the programme.
