AASU observes black day

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 Members of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today observed black day all over the State in protest against the September 15 incident of physical assault on its members in Golaghat district by the personnel of the Nagaland Police and demanding stringent punitive measures against the guilty police personnel.

Meanwhile, the All Golaghat District Students' Union (AGDSU) of the AASU has started its economic blockade against Nagaland in protest against the September 15 incident and demanding punishment to the guilty police personnel. The AASU central committee has approved this agitational programme of the AGDSU.

The All Jorhat District Students' Union (AJDSU) has also launched a similar agitational programme in Jorhat district in support of the AGDSU agitation.

Members of the students' body hoisted black flags at the district headquarters of the State. They also held demonstrations, between 12 noon and 2 pm, at the district headquarters covering their faces with pieces of black cloth.

The AASU said in a statement here this evening that it would never tolerate the barbaric atrocities of the Nagaland Police on Assam soil. The guilty police personnel should be punished. But the Assam Government has totally failed to persuade the Nagaland Government to initiate steps against the guilty police personnel, the students' body alleged.

It however, made it clear that it is not against the common people of Nagaland, but it wants stringent punishment to the guilty police personnel.

Members of the All Kamrup District Students' Union (AKDSU) of the AASU held their two-hour-long demonstration on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri here today in response to the AASU call.
