AASU memo on agriculture sector uplift

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 29 The All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Friday last submitted memoranda to the Agriculture Department in every district and subdivisional agriculture offices, demanding immediate intervention to bail out the States agriculture sector and the farming community.

The State Government has failed miserably in addressing the pressing concerns of the agriculture sector and the languishing farmers. Technological interventions, irrigation, free seeds and fertilizers, etc., continue to remain out of reach of the farmers, especially the small and marginal farmers, the AASU said in a statement.

Pointing out that agriculture has been the bedrock of the States economy, the AASU said that the vital sector continued to be sluggish despite endowed with favourable geo-climatic conditions. This is precisely because the Government has failed to act as a facilitator in uplifting the sector, the AASU said.

The AASU also warned of a Statewide stir unless the Government did the needful to put agriculture on the fast-track growth path.
