AASU leaders slam anti-people policies, communal politics

SUALKUCHI, Nov 5 - All Assam Students� Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the student body follows the ideals established by Srimanta Sankaradeva and Azan Fakir, and vehemently criticised the �anti-people� policies adapted by the BJP-led state and central governments and their �communal and regional polarization which are detrimental to the harmony of different communities�.

Gogoi was speaking at the 16th annual session of the All Kamrup District Students� Association held at Bamundi with a day-long programme on Wednesday. The AASU leader also called upon the students to keep vigil against divisive forces in the state.

Releasing the souvenir, Kamrupa, brought out on the occasion, AASU advisor Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya laid stress on writing about the local history dealing with socio-economic aspects of different regions of Kamrup district.

Earlier, the programme started with flag hoisting by Dibakar Kalita, president of the All Kamrup District Students� Association, while secretary Hemanta Das paid floral tribute to martyrs. Four distinguished persons � Bamundi HS School retired headmaster Surjyakanta Kalita, headmaster Bipul Kumar Bora, Padma Ram Bharali HS School headmaster Shukleshwar Kalita and Bamundi Raj Gayrah president Sabha Ram Kalita � planted saplings to mark the occasion.

The delegates� meet was held with Dibakar Kalita in the chair. The conference was inaugurated by AASU assistant secretary Prakash Chandra Das, who said that the aim of the student body should be to preserve the identity of the people of Assam.

Participating in the meeting, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said the student body maintains good discipline among the members and imparts training on controlling behaviour and paves the way to a good life.

The conference was attended by delegates from 22 regional student bodies.
