AASU leader quits

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 12 - Simanta Thakuria, a central executive committee member of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), has resigned from the committee, alleging autocratic functioning by the AASU president.

Addressing a press conference, Thakuria said the AASU leadership was violating the principles of the organisations Constitution and that it was shedding its apolitical character.

Thakuria said that in another sudden, autocratic and unconstitutional move by the party president, the convenor committee formed by the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Students Union was dissolved on October 3, keeping the functionaries and several other leaders in the dark.

Thakuria further said that the anti-CAB movement, which was the result of peoples spontaneous participation, lost its steam after the AASU leadership failed to object to the organisation being used by certain circles to acquire political power.

The advisory committee had suggested to the AASU to concentrate on educational and economic issues but the leadership was adamant on following a political course by violating Section 5(A) of the organisations Constitution, he said.
