AASU holds rally over NRC update

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 7 Members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today took out torchlight processions all over the State in protest against the State Governments halting the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and its rampant corruption. They also demanded immediate steps to stop construction of all the mega hydel projects, including the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project.

The AASU members condemned the present regime in the State for its blocking the NRC updating process, efforts to protect the Bangladeshi nationals and siding with the mega-dam lobby. The special audit report of the Accountant General has also revealed involvement of the present State Government in large scale corruption, they alleged.

They also alleged that the State Government has been surrendering the interest of the State to the Delhi leaders.

The AASU said in a press release here that the revelations of the AG report has left no alternative for Tarun Gogoi, who is also holding the Finance portfolio, to resign. For, he has sent crores of rupees to North Cachar Hills District in excess of the budgetary provisions. All financial norms have been flouted while committing these irregularities, alleged the AASU.

In the city, members of the All Kamrup District Students Union took out a procession in response to the AASU call.
