AASU hails SC ruling on NRC

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 5 - Welcoming the Supreme Court ruling on gaon panchayat certificate and original inhabitant issues, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today said it would help prepare an error-free NRC.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the apex court has directed verification of the panchayat certificates and only then it can be accepted as a supporting document. The panchayat certificate will be accepted only as a supporting document, they said.

The student body further said that a watertight mechanism should be adopted to ensure that illegal migrants are not able to get their names included in the NRC. Todays ruling by the apex court will prevent illegal migrants from using fake documents to get enrolled in the NRC, it said.

Further, the AASU said the original inhabitant system is an administrative system and there should not be any unnecessary confusion over it.
