AASU for safeguarding Assamese culture, language by all means

DULIAJAN, Nov 19 - The massive cultural procession named �Samanaya Sanskritik Sobhajatra� by the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) held here on Thursday showcased the rich cultural components of Assam. More than 20,000 people, including all the district unit representatives from the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barak Valley along with the people from different parts of the State, took part in the procession. The procession was one of the main events of the student body�s second day of the conference held at the Duliajan Salakataki Public Playground.

Starting from the Public Playground, the cultural procession depicted Bihu, Bhaona, Gayan Bayan, Aai Naam, Biya Naam, Assamese rural and cultivation traditions, cultures of Tai Ahom, Chutiya, Moran, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi and tea tribe and various cultural traditions of different tribal communities among others by the participants. The procession then moved around the oil township. The procession was inaugurated by AASU chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya said, �Politics breaks society but culture builds society.� He put emphasises on the uplift of Assamese culture. �The cultures of Assam and the Northeast differ from the rest of Indian culture. Our culture is unique,� he added.

He said Srimanta Sankaradeva, Madhab Deva, Naranarayan, Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Dr Bhupen Hazarika and other pioneers and pathfinders from Assam already shown that the Assamese culture is different from the rest of the country.

Before the inauguration of the procession, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath hoisted the AASU flag at the venue. AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi did the swahid tarpan ceremony. After the swahid tarpan, Gogoi made some crucial points on the significance of the AASU's 17th conference at Duliajan.

�The Assamese people are going through a very critical and challenging phase because of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. It is threatening our language and culture,� Gogoi said.

In his speech, the AASU general secretary mentioned that a plan would be made for taking the movements concerning issues like the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, implementation of NRC, the danger posed by big dams, flood and land erosion to the general masses of the State.

The AASU president praised the people of Duliajan in particular and Dibrugarh district in general for the warm hospitality given to the AASU office-bearers who came here to attend the conference.
