GUWAHATI, May 28 - The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has said the present academic session from January to December was the best suited for students of Assam in view of the social conditions and natural environment of the State and the government should rather concentrate on solving the problems arising out of the pandemic than altering the entire session.

An AASU delegation led by its chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya and president Dipanka Kumar Nath today met SEBA chairman RC Jain here and submitted its suggestions over a range of academic issues, apart from registering its opposition to the governments proposal to change the academic year from January-December to April-March.

The academic calendar, prepared at the initiative of AASU and Assam Unnati Sabha with active participation of as many as 12 teachers bodies from primary to university level, was accepted and executed by the State government itself. After thorough consultation with the State academia and widely studying the students requirement and socio-environmental issues of Assam, it was found the January-December period provided the most favourable academic conditions and highest academic days to the students here, Bhattacharyya told The Assam Tribune.

The student leader further argued that before the pandemic, the academic calendar was working effectively and the State students were not even facing any problem in getting admission in institutes in other parts of the country after metric or HS finals.

We urge the Government of Assam to look into the matter with a very positive attitude, shunning all its preconceived notions. The government must also not make it an ego issue just because AASU has raised this matter, he mentioned.

State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference on May 7 has stated that the Government of Assam was contemplating to alter the academic year and extend the present session up to March to minimise the loss induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Floating this proposal among the State academia for their opinion, the government also said that this system would bring Assam at par with the most of the other boards across the country that follow the March-April session.

The student body said the COVID-19 pandemic was an extraordinary and unforeseen situation and the government should work on a mechanism to make the most of the remaining academic days. It also suggested that government holidays should be curtailed to get more academic days and classes should be continued on Saturdays, besides arranging subject-wise special classes for students of senior classes once the lockdown period gets over.

We must also not follow a rigid approach of completing the entire syllabus during this year, in view of the present pandemic situation. Through some special steps and some relaxations, we can deal with the situation and ensure that the academic year of the students is effectively saved, Bhattacharyya said.
