DIBRUGARH, July 3 Enthused at media reports that another IIT would be established in the state, AASU today urged the State Government to set up the proposed IIT at Dibrugarh.

Speaking to this newspaper today, AASU assistant general secretary Rituparna Baruah said the proposed IIT should be set up at Dibrugarh as the city has not had any new educational institution of national repute after the establishment of the Assam Medical College and the Dibrugarh University.

Baruah said Dibrugarh has all the logistical infrastructure for the establishment of an IIT, and cited that the state's most industrialised district should have not only an IIT but also an IIIT and an AIIMS-like medical institution to complement to the historic Assam Medical College.

Meanwhile, the Dibrugarh district unit of AASU has welcomed the news of the proposed new IIT in the state, and has written to the State Government, demanding its location in the city. President of the All Dibrugarh District Students Union, Sanjib Changmai said that the district has not had a new educational institution of major significance since the days of the Assam agitation.
