AASU for CBI probe into rhino poaching

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 15 - The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today demanded that the government should hand over the probe into all incidents of killing of rhinos, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Talking to The Assam Tribune, AASU president Dipanka Nath said that the recovery of huge amounts of money from the residence of a Forest Department official is a matter of serious concern and only a probe by the CBI can unearth the truth about the killing of rhinos. He said that the incident also proved the fact that there is an urgent need to reform the Forest Department.

Nath pointed out that during the tenure of the previous government, the AASU had sought the intervention of the Prime Minister to check the killing of rhinos. He said that the new government in the State should immediately hand over the cases of killing of rhinos to the CBI.

The AASU also demanded that the Home and Forest departments should join hands to chalk out a plan to prevent the killing of rhinos. It also said that the Government should formulate a new act to ensure stringent punishment to poachers and those involved in illegal rhino horn trade.
