GUWAHATI, Oct 8 � Reiterating that it had a big role in the proposed world-class university to be set up in Assam, the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today said that there had been a deep-rooted conspiracy to deny the State the varsity even after an announcement to that effect by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and it was due to the �timely action� by the students body that the sinister move was defeated.
In a statement, the AASU said that even Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was left in the dark about the conspiracy by the vested interest lobby that was hell-bent upon depriving Assam of its legitimate share of one of the proposed 14 world-class universities as announced by the Prime Minister.
Reacting to the Chief Minister�s contention that the State Government was responsible for getting the varsity for Assam, the AASU said that it had been demanding for different top educational institutions of higher learning for a long time.
