GUWAHATI, June 14 � Asserting that the independent entity of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra should be kept intact, and it should not be converted into a cremation ground at any cost, the All Assam Students� Union today said that the decision to cremate Bihu Samrat Khagen Mahanta within the Kalakshetra boundary was taken hurriedly by the State government.
In a statement, the AASU said that the Kalakshetra was established as a result of the Assam Accord and as a signatory of the Accord, the AASU had a responsibility in ensuring that the status and identity of the Kalakshetra is maintained in letter and spirit.
�The campus of the Kalakshetra, which has been named after the great saint Shankardev must be exclusive and in future it needs to be ensured that no funeral is performed within the campus of Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra,� it said.
Holding the State government responsible over the developments, the AASU said that in its haste, the State government didn�t bother to consult civil society. Now, the government must come up with a decision that can convince the people of the State.
