AASU, ethnic bodies want NRC work to continue

GUWAHATI, July 31 � Representatives of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) and 24 organisations representing different ethnic groups today met Governor JB Patnaik and demanded that the pilot project of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of 1951 in two revenue circles of the state should not be suspended at any cost.

The organisations submitted a memorandum to the Governor and also demanded that construction of mega dams in the state should be stopped and flood and erosion should be treated as national problems.

Talking to The Assam Tribune after meeting the Governor, AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said the representatives of the organisations demanded that the pilot project in the revenue circles of Barpeta and Chaygaon should be completed as soon as possible and the process of updating the NRC should be started immediately all over the state.

Bhattacharya said the representatives of the organisations expressed the view that there was no flaw in the application forms used for updating the NRC and the Government should make efforts to make the people aware of the mechanism used for the process so that no one can mislead the people. They also demanded stern action against anyone found to be involved in giving a communal colour to the issue of updating the NRC and asserted that they would never accept postponement of the process of updating the citizenship document.

AASU general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said the representatives of the organisations called upon the Governor to impress upon the Government of India to consider flood and erosion as national problems and to take effective measures to deal with the same. They further demanded that immediate steps should be taken to protect Majuli river island, which is facing extinction due to severe erosion.

The representatives of the organisations further demanded that construction of mega dams in the foothills of the Himalayas should be stopped immediately. They said that the construction of the Lower Subansiri project should be stopped as the committee of experts from Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati also expressed the view that construction of mega dams can have dangerous consequences.

The representatives of AASU and 24 organisations would also meet the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister with the same demands soon.

Representatives of AASU , Sadau Asom Tribal Sangha, MMK, ABSU, All Rabha Students� Union, TMPK, Tiwa Students� Union, Tai Ahom Students� Union, Dimasa Students� Federation, Tea Tribes Students� Union, Koch Rajbonshi Students� Union, Motok Yuba Chatra Sanmilan, Moran Students� Union, Deuri Students� Union, Karbi Students� Union, Adivashi Students� Union, Gorkha Students� Union, KSU, Sarania Kachari Students� Union, NC Hills Indigenous Students� Forum, etc met the Governor today.

Bhattacharya said the Governor assured the delegation that he would take up the issues raised in today�s meeting with the Central and State governments.
