AASU demands probe into recruitment scam

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 8 - The All Assam Students Union today demanded a high-level probe into the alleged recruitment scam in the information & public relations and panchayat & rural development departments.

Expressing shock at the blatant irregularities in the recent process of recruitment in the two departments, the student body also questioned the silence of the Chief Minister who has been claiming that his government has launched a crusade against corruption.

While on the one hand the Sonowal government says it had adopted zero tolerance against corruption, on the other, massive irregularities have been reported in the process of recruitment of staff for various posts in the I&PR department which is headed by the Chief Minister himself, and in the P&RD. The BJP government had promised to bring about transparency in the recruitment so that only deserving and meritorious people get jobs. The recent recruitment has unmasked the ugly intentions of the government, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said.

Alleging that associates of BJP leaders have been linked to the recruitment, the AASU leaders said the people were sick of the corruption in the previous regimes and they wanted a change, but this new government has failed to provide any respite.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of irregularity involving appointment into permanent posts in the panchayat and rural development department.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the media reports about the controversy, the Chief Minister ordered formation of a one-man panel by Addl Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah to probe the whole episode and submit a report to the government at the earliest.
