AASU demands increase of seats in colleges

By STAFF Correspondent

JORHAT, Aug 13 - AASU members here on Thursday staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioners office in support of several demands relating to the education sector.

Holding placards and shouting slogans, the protesters demanded an increase in the number of seats in colleges, if necessary introducing night session classes for students and enrolling all higher and higher secondary passed out students in colleges.

The student body, through the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, later separately sent memoranda to the State Education Minister and Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University stating their demands.

AASU State organising secretary Jul Khound, assistant general secretary (AASUs Jorhat district unit) Bijoy Shankar Bordoloi and education secretary (Jorhat district) Rajib Bora were among those who took part in the stir.

The protesters said because of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, many students, who earlier used to go out of the State, had got themselves admitted in colleges in their respective places this year, thereby necessitating an increase in seat capacity of the colleges in the State.
