By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 21 The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demonstrate the boldness for undertaking scientific studies on the mega hydel projects proposed in Arunachal Pradesh covering the aspects of their dam safety, downstream impacts and cumulative impacts.

In a statement here, the students body has requested the Prime Minister to honour the suggestions of the Assam experts and the study being carried out on the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) by the expert committee formed by his Government after the December 11 and 12 discussions in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, thirteen organisations of the State have demanded in a joint memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review all the mega dam projects proposed in Arunachal Pradesh and to scrap all those hydel projects which have been proved to be devastating.

They also demanded a basin wise survey prior to undertaking any mega dam hydel project in the NE region and to conceive and design such projects as run-of-the river (RoR) ones in the true sense of the term. Such projects are needed to keep the rivers of the region alive and also to prevent any dam-related catastrophe, the argued.

In the case of the dams coming up on the Brahmaputra (Tsangpo) in its Chinese part, the organisations pleaded for mobilising international support in favour of India to check any Chinese bid to divert the river or to dam its flow. For the purpose, the United Nations Organisation (UNO) may also be moved, they said.

The organisations included All Assam Mottock Yuba Chatra Parishad, All Assam Sonowal Kachari Chatra Santha, All Assam Brihotter Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Asom Yuva Parishad, Hindi Yuva Chatra Parishad, Tal Pathar Krishak Shramik Unnayan Parishad, Kolakhowa Mising Dolang Bane Kebang Mahasava, Bhojpuri Yuva Chatra Parishad, All Assam Kaibortta Yuva Chatra Parishad, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Sanmillan, All Assam Koch Chatra Santha, All Assam Anusuchita Jati Yuva Chatra Santha and the All Assam Sanmileet Maha Sangha.
