DIBRUGARH, Jan 29 - The local committees of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) staged one-hour road blockade on NH 37 near Convoy Road level crossing here as part of the State-wide protest against assault on the members of the student body in Nalbari on Sunday.
The students� body blocked the road from 12 noon to 1 pm. Hundreds of vehicles were caught stranded on all the roads due to the blockade. The roads were opened for traffic only after 1 pm.
Meanwhile, the Sangbidhan Sangshodhani Virodhi Mancha today staged street plays and music shows in various parts of the Lahowal Assembly Constituency on the outskirts of the city. The theme of the shows was �Bidheok Hataok, Asom Bosaok�, said the Mancha�s Dibrugarh unit convenor, Sarat Chandra Neog.
The Mancha staged their shows today in interior rural locations like Phutahola, Lahowal Patra Gaon, Dibrual Changmai Gaon, Dangorpothar, Habichuk and others. At each of the places, the citizens were told of the perils of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 through songs and theatrical presentations. Neog said the team would continue their campaign on January 30 at the Lezai Kolakhowa area of the Dibrugarh district.
Our North Lakhimpur Correspondent adds: The Lakhimpur district unit and North Lakhimpur unit of All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today blocked National Highway-15 in Hatilung in North Lakhimpur in protest of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 and act of violence on fellow AASU members by ruling BJP supporters at Nalbari on Sunday.
The district AASU unit led by its president Pulak Borah and secretary Dhanmani Dutta and the North Lakhimpur unit led by its president Pranjal Gogoi and secretary Poonamjyoti Buragohain along with hundreds of supporters blocked NH-15 at Hatilung shouting slogans against the bill and the physical assault met by its fellow members in the hands of BJP workers. The blockade was also attended by the financial secretary of the AASU�s central committee Krishna Das and advisor of Lakhimpur AASU Sanjeev Konwar. The AASU also held a sit-in demonstration in front of the Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Girls High School in North Lakhimpur today on the same issue today. Representatives of various organisations and prominent members of the public also participated in the demonstration programme.
Earlier on Monday the North Lakhimpur AASU had burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State BJP president Ranjit Dass in protesting the physical assault on its fellow members by BJP workers at Nalbari on Sunday.
Our Dhemaji Correspondent adds: The Dhemaji district unit of All Assam Students� Union (AASU) blocked National Highway-15 at Dhemaji Chariali for an hour today and shouted slogans against the BJP government and demanded immediate arrest of those who had attacked the AASU activists at Nalbari on Sunday. They also took out took out a torchlight procession in and around Dhemaji town in the evening protesting the alleged assault on its members by BJP workers at Nalbari.
The unit had also burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Ranjit Dass at Dhemaji town on Monday.
Our Jorhat Staff Correspondent adds: AASU activists under the leadership of AASU State organising secretary Jul Khound today blocked the National Highway-37 at Jorhat�s western bypass end for an hour from noon to protest against the attack on the students� body members at Nalbari district on Sunday reportedly by BJP supporters.
The activists, carrying posters and banners shouted slogans against the BJP, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP Assam unit president Ranjit Dass and against CAB.
Meanwhile, students of JB College (Autonomous) here with the support of AASU JB College unit placed a black cloth on the TV screen of the college as a sign of protest to stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi�s special programme for students telecast today.
Jagiroad Correspondent adds: Road communication between upper and lower Assam was disrrupted from 12 pm to 1pm today at Jagiroad due to AASU�s state-wide NH blockade programme against the attack on AASU members protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in Nalbari on Sunday. The Jagiroad Anchalik Students� Union in association with the Sadou Morigaon Zila Students� Union further demanded scrapping of the controversial Bill.
A Correspondent adds from Nagaon: The Nagaon district unit of the All Assam Students� Union staged a road blockade stir near Uriagaon bypass Chariali against the recent attack on AASU�s activists in Nalbari by some BJP workers. Hundreds of agitators blocked the NH-37 for over an hour.
