DULIAJAN, Nov 21 - The open meeting of the 17th convention of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) here today witnessed raising of several key demands, including preparation of a proper NRC and implementation of the Clause 6 of Assam Accord, the fulfilment of which would be vital for the State in the coming days.
Top leadership of the largest student body of Assam was in attendance in the open meeting that was presided over by AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath.
Explaining the ideology of the student body in the meeting, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi called for a relentless democratic movement for securing a better future for the indigenous Assamese people. �The rights, culture and language of the indigenous Assamese must have to be protected by all means,� he said.
�Indigenous Assamese will not accept the life of second category citizens in their motherland,� he said, adding that �we need a proper NRC as also implementation of the Clause 6 of Assam Accord for securing our future�.
Gogoi said, �People of Assam have already shown to Delhi and to the world up to what extent we can organise a movement if the powers that be at the Centre forced to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill in our land.�
He also said that the AASU would also continue its journey and struggle to uplift the student community of the State. �We, the AASU, would like to watch our new generation of students in a better and stronger position in the next 20 to 30 years,� he added.
Participating in the meeting, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad general secretary Palash Changmai stressed on the need of choosing a regional political alternative by the people of Assam. �The time has come to think differently to solve our problems,� he added.
The inaugural address of the meeting was given by the president of the organising committee of the AASU Duliajan conference and former principal of Duliajan College, Dr Surendra Nath Gogoi.
AASU chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya participated in the meeting as special speaker, while Srimanta Sankardev Sangha padadhikar Kamalakanta Gogoi was the special guest.
Dilip Kumar Bhuyan, CGM, Oil India Limited; Milan Sonowal, president, All Assam Tribal Sangha; Litul Buragohain, president, All Tai Ahom Students� Union; Dharani Gohain, president, All Motok Yuva Chatra Sanmilan; Nripen Khanda, president, All Rabha Students� Union; Arjun Chetry, president, All Assam Gorkha Students� Union; Hafizul Ahmed, president, All Assam Deshi Jatiya Parishad, among others, participated in the meeting as distinguished guests.
The open meeting was going on at the time of filing of this report.
The selection of the next AASU executive body will be done at a meeting later tonight. The meeting that is likely to continue till morning hours will also deliberate on Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya�s decision on leaving the AASU.
