AASU blames govt for price rise

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 3 Accusing the State Government of having little control over the markets, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today said that it was precisely due to the indifferent attitude of the authorities that the unscrupulous traders were emboldened to effect unilateral hikes as per their whims.

In a statement, the AASU said that at a time when the common man was already reeling under abnormal price rise, it was shocking that a traders body could threaten about a further hike in prices of essential commodities.

The prevailing situation exposes the State Government to be virtually non-existent as it has made a complete surrender before the traders lobby. The role of the Food and Civil Supply Department and the Minister concerned has been most deplorable, the AASU said.

The AASU said that such continuous price clearly hinted at some understanding between the traders and the Government. There is total chaos in the markets, and this is not possible without a thriving unholy nexus between the government machinery and the businessmen, it added.

The AASU demanded that the Government immediately initiated firm measures to curb price rise and check the whimsical functioning of the traders. If the Government remains a mute spectator to the developments, the AASU will launch a vigorous agitation against price rise, it said.
