AASU-backed candidates win top posts

JALUKBARI, Sept 12 - Manash Pratim Duoarah and Monjit Sharma have been elected president and general secretary of the Post Graduate Students� Union (PGSU) of the Gauhati University. The results of the PGSU election were announced this evening.

While Manash Pratim Duoarah and Monjit Sharma were backed by the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), Deeepak Bora of NSUI was elected as the vice-president of the PGSU.

Eight AASU candidates, two NSUI candidates, two SMSS candidates and two ABVP candidates made it to the union body.

Assistant General Secretary Anjita Paul (NSUI), Literary Secretary Himakshi Borah (SMSS), Music Secretary Barasha Rani Baruah (AASU), Cultural Secretary Bhaskarjyoti Sarma (SMSS), Debate and Symposia Secretary Himamani Kalita (AASU), Boys� Common Room Secretary Ranjan Upadhaya (ABVP), Girls� Common Room Secretary Sagarika Sarma (AASU), Gymnasium Secretary Masum Janid (AASU), Sports Secretary David Basumatary, Major Games Secretary Ariful Islam (AASU) and Social Service Secretary Gaurang Boro (AASU) were elected to the student union.

One candidate, Phanindra Basumatary of ABVP, was elected uncontested. Altogether, 15 candidates were elected.

This time, the turnout of voters was 63 per cent. There are around 3,009 voters, of which only 2,400 exercised their franchise. However, 969 students chose the NOTA option.
