SILCHAR, Jan 9 - At a time when crores of people of Assam, mostly in Barak Valley, are perplexed to find their names missing from the first published partial list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Samujjal Bhattacharya, chief adviser of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), said that the people who have come and settled in Assam before the midnight of March 24, 1971, have no reason to worry.
The AASU chief adviser, who was here to attend the annual conference-cum-27th foundation day celebration of All Dimasa Students Union (ADSU) at the District Library auditorium on Monday said, If any citizen who is a permanent settler of Assam prior to 1971 faces problems regarding inclusion of names in the NRC, AASU shall extend all possible help to their cause.
Further, reiterating the stance on the vexed issue of citizenship as per the provisions of the Assam Accord, Bhattacharya said that the students body will oppose the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, meant to safeguard the displaced minorities.
We have pledged to make Assam free from illegal migrants. Hence we shall in no way accept any further burden imposed on us. The long-pending issue of illegal citizenship in the State is inching closer to a plausible solution after 32 years under the supervision of the Supreme Court. We hope to see a conclusion drawn on the issue, Bhattacharya maintained.
