AASU appeal to NSF to lift blockade

GUWAHATI, June 7 � The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today made an appeal to the Naga Students� Federation (NSF) to end its month-long economic blockade against Manipur on humanitarian grounds.

In a letter written to NSF president Mutsikhoyo Yhobu, AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said that the over a month-long economic blockade launched against Manipur at the instance of the NSF, has made the people of the NE region worried.

The economic blockade has created severe hardship for the common people of Manipur. By this time the blockade programme has made its point and it is time now to discuss all the issues among the NE states �in an atmosphere of understanding and with a sense of belongingness to the region. There can be useful discussion between NSF and AASU,� said the AASU leaders in their letter to the NSF president.

Meanwhile, the North East Students� Organisation (NESO) has been continuing its efforts at amicably bringing an end to the impasse created by the NSF economic blockade. For the purpose, the NESO has been discussing the issue with all its partner organisations, said the AASU leaders in their statement.

A joint meeting of the six organisations of Mizoram � Mizo Students� Union, Mizo National Front, Mizo People�s Conference, Mizo Hmeichhe Insulbkhawm Pawl, Zoram Nationalists Party Youth and the Mizoram unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party � has regretted the �misunderstanding� that has arisen between the Manipuri and Naga people.

In a joint statement, these organisations said that it is the wishes of the meeting that the dispute be resolved and normalcy be restored �as soon as possible.� The participants of the meeting also expressed their willingness to take any necessary step for restoration of normal relations between the two states, said the joint statement.
