AASU, allies protest against Sonapur toll plaza

By CORRESPONDENT

JORABAT, Sept 21 - The Dimoria unit of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) along with several organisations of Dimoria, raising their voices against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and other issues, staged a massive protest at Sonapur this afternoon.

Members of the Union, along with hundreds of other protesters from Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Tea Students Association (AATSA), Asom Mahila Sangha (AMS), Greater Dimoria Youth Welfare Association (GDYWA) and a share cab association Dimoria Magic Union slammed the State government over the new toll plaza at Sonapur as well as against the draft notification for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), 2020.

The protesters marched from the Sonapur playground to the National Highway 37 and blocked the busy highway for about an hour. They shouted slogans against the government for playing with the emotions of the people.

Several higher officials, including Debaraj Upadhaya, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Bipul Kr Das, Additional Deputy Commissioner, and Gautam Borah, DCP-East, rushed to the spot and assured them to look into their demands.

Dibyojyoti Medhi, general secretary of the Kamrup Metro unit of AASU, alleged that the people passing through the Sonapur toll plaza are charged double the legal amount.

Reaffirming his staunch opposition, Medhi said, The people of Dimoria are against the toll plaza and it will not be acceptable at any cost. However, following the protest, we were assured by the officials to address our issues concerning the toll plaza within 10 days.

The protesters also made a strong demand for solving the artificial flood problem at Jorabat and threatened to stage more vigorous protests if their concerns are not addressed by the government soon.
