AASU-AJYCP to declare political outfit by September 15

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 11 - With the motto Assam first, always and ever, the All Assam Students Union and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad are going to declare the name of their political outfit on or before September 15. Both the organisations, in a joint press meet held today, declared that the new political party would follow progressive regionalism and would also maintain equidistance from communal as well as national political parties.

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi pointed out that the Assam Accord and the recommendations of the high level committee on its Clause 6 would top the agenda of the new outfit.

However, neither AASU nor AJYCP exhibited any inclination towards peasant leader Akhil Gogois call for a joint political move by all anti-Citizenship Amendment Act organisations to check BJP in 2021 Assembly elections. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity leader, on Thursday, had stated that lack of unity among the anti-CAA forces would give BJP a walkover in the Assembly polls.

The decision to form a strong regional party has been taken as per the suggestions given by the Assam Paramarshadata Committee formed by the two organisations on August 19, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath told media-persons here today. Conveners of the advisory committee, Dr Krishnagopal Bhatacharyya and Basanta Deka have been made the conveners of the organising committee for the new political party and are entrusted with the responsibility to prepare the blueprint of the organisational structure of the new outfit.

In view of the current political scenario in Assam, the need of an uncompromising regional political force was strongly felt. The same was reflected in the report of the advisory committee that comprised some of the most learned and conscious citizens of Assam. Accordingly, we have decided to go ahead with the plans to form a new regional political party that would keep the interest of Assam and the Assamese paramount, Nath said adding that the both AASU and AJYCP, however, would remain apolitical organisations.

With regard to the KMSS proposal, the AASU president said that AASU fought the anti-CAA movement alongside AJYCP, 30 indigenous organisations and the artiste fraternity, whereas KMSS has its own ideology which it followed during the protest. Everyone have their own opinion. However, we are in touch with the 30 indigenous organisations and other like-minded bodies, he added.
