DIBRUGARH, Sept 10 - Tension gripped the student community in Dibrugarh University following clashes between members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) last evening in the backdrop of impending Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students Union (DUPGSU) elections.
The academic ambience of Dibrugarh University has been affected since cancellation of the nomination papers of one of the candidates. Following strong protest from the student community, the varsity authorities had to put the elections on hold.
Yesterdays incident of attack has further ruined the ambience. According to a police complaint, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members have alleged that members of All Assam Students Union attacked them outside the varsity campus. On the other hand, the AASU has also reportedly lodged a counter police complaint of assault against the ABVP members.
It is gathered that the ABVP organising secretary of the district Rohit Nayan Baruah and the former state ABVP secretary Nayan Jyoti Sarma had gone to meet the Vice Chancellor. They were reportedly attacked when they were coming out of the varsity campus. Sections of student community fear possible escalation during the elections.
