DERGAON, Oct 9 - Bishnupur Bimalanagar Durga Puja Samiti of Guwahati with a theme of Eco-system was adjudged as the best eco-friendly Durga Puja pandal in Assam by AASHRAY, an organisation working for environment conservation.
In the keenly-contested competition, the Subhash Pally Kalibari Durga Puja Samiti Dibrugarh with the theme Education was declared as the second while Dergaon Rajahuwa Durga Puja Samiti with the theme of forest conservation and traditional dhak and Barowary Durga Puja Samiti with the theme Assamese Culture were declared jointly third.
The Sripuria Purbanchal Durga Puja Samiti with the theme rhino conservation was named for the fourth position. Similarly, Udorbond Kalibari Durga Puja Samiti, Barak valley and Dhubri Vyawsai Samiti were declared for judges special prize and Anjan Tamuly of Kathanibari, West Jorhat who organised the puja at his own effort with idol made of waste papers by himself will be awarded AASHRAY�s special prize.
The first four position holders will be awarded cash of Rs 10,000, Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 1000 along with certificates while the others will also be awarded certificate of proficiency.
For the selection of the awardees, a total of 23 judges across the state selected the best puja pandal at the regional level while in the final stage Dr Manoj Jyoti Hazarika and Dr Devajit Baruah participated as the final round judges.
After careful observation of the photos and videos along with interaction of the shortlisted puja pandals, the judges finalised the top seven puja samitis of Assam with the criteria of eco-friendliness.
To make awareness on cutting down the use of plastic in Durga Puja pandals and to ensure cleanliness during the puja celebration, the best puja pandal award was announced at the state level. The secretary of AASHRAY, Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika said that the awards would be given at a function on October 24.
