AAP flays BJP over big dams

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 18 The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Assam on Wednesday accused the ruling BJP government in the Centre of double speak in regard to its stand on big dams.

The party said that the BJP secured the support of the people of Assam in the general election 2014 by endorsing the stand of the organisations and citizens of the state who have been opposing big dams, but as soon as it came to power it exposed itself by doing a total volte face and taking a pro corporate stand.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has exposed his anti-people nature by laying the foundation of a big dam in Bhutan that is going to endanger lower Assam. The Narendra Modi-led government simply used the anti-dam sentiments of numerous organisations, student bodies and people of Assam to increase its seat tally in the state, said the party adding that during the election campaign to the general election 2014, Narendra Modi had strongly voiced against big dams thus winning the trust of the people.

The party also reminded that senior BJP leaders like Rajnath Singh and even Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at different times had been very vocal against big dams. It needs to be mentioned here that the saffron party had used various mediums including the press to express its opposition to the big dams.

But now as soon as it won the mandate of the people it forgot its promise made to the people of Assam regarding big dams. The Narendra Modi government is efficiently following in the footsteps of its Congress predecessor, said the party insisting that all ongoing and proposed big dam projects be scrapped in the interest of Assam.

The party further warned that it would launch a vigorous movement against big dams if the government ignores the concerns of the people of Assam.
