AAI soccer gets underway

GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - The All India Inter-zonal football tournament of Airports Authority of India (AAI) kick started at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Tepesia today.

The 5-day tournament was inaugurated by RG Lama, Regional Executive Director (officiate), AAI-NER; Ramesh Kumar, Airport Director, Guwahati Airport along with the LNIPE Dean, Dr B Basumatary.

Welcoming the players and the team managers, Lama said, �We are happy to host the All India Inter-zonal Football Tournament at this beautiful place of North East where we have good climate, good people and ample space to explore. The arrangements here at the LNIPE is quite good and the sports facilities are of world class level which will also motivate professionals like us to engage ourselves in sports activities.�

Informing about the sports activities and facilities at the LNIPE, Dr Basumatary said that they are excited to be associated with the Airports Authority of India and will try to fulfil all the requirements of the players and the staff from their side.

A total of 102 players from Central Headquarters, New Delhi; Eastern Region, Kolkata; Northern Region, Delhi; Western Region, Mumbai; Southern Region, Chennai and the host North East Region, Guwahati are participating in the championship which will conclude on October 15.

The inaugural match was played between Central Headquarters (New Delhi) and Southern Region (Chennai) where Southern Region won 6-0, stated a release.
