GUWAHATI, Feb 27 - Aadhaar coverage in Assam is the poorest in the country, while the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has generated over 123.36 crore Aadhaar numbers in the country so far.
In Assam and Meghalaya, the exercise started only recently, but now it is picking up. In Assam, the enrolment has been 14.38 per cent, while in Meghalaya it is 28.45 so far, an official source told The Assam Tribune.
The enrolment percentage is as per the projected population of 2018.
�Most of the banks in Assam have now started the enrolment activity. Also, around 1,200 enrolment centres have been opened in the State � all in government office premises. The General Administration Department is the nodal agency for the exercise in Assam,� the source said.
In the North East, Tripura has the highest coverage so far with 93.58 per cent. In Mizoram, enrolment is 89.60 per cent, in Sikkim 89.59 per cent, in Manipur 83.81 per cent, in Arunachal Pradesh 80.02 per cent and in Nagaland it is 59.28 per cent.
In Tripura, the state government has linked the Aadhaar number to various schemes.
�After the Aadhaar was linked to various schemes, the Tripura government has been able to plug many leakages. For example, it has detected some 55,000 bogus cards in the PDS beneficiary list. A beneficiary can have multiple identity proofs and forged documents, but he can have only one Aadhaar number and cannot duplicate it,� the source claimed.
The official source further said that the Central government has saved around Rs 1,09,983 crore so far by linking the Aadhaar to several schemes, which led to detection of crores of bogus beneficiaries.
