A rural govt school in Sonitpur district shows the way

By Shambhu Boro

TEZPUR, June 2 - At a time when people show more interest in sending their children to private schools for getting better education, Jugal High School at Bamunpukhuri-Kawoimari area under Dhekiajuli LAC in Sonitpur district has set an example by attracting parents and students over the last five years. Supported by its dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff and the School Development and Management body, the Headmaster has been able to deliver proper education to the rural students resulting in their all-round development.

This lesser known secondary level Assamese medium rural school has now become a major attraction for parents of the greater Kawoimari area for innovative activities carried out to promote the students. Starting in 1958, as an outcome of the selfless zeal of founder Headmaster Kanak Chandra Boro and some dedicated people of the area, the rural school after witnessing many ups and downs presently stands in the area as a standard of physical and educational development of children.

The dedicated teaching staff is continuing classes for the Classes IX and X, obeying every possible COVID-19 protocol, so that the academic schedule is not hampered. Interacting with this reporter, the Headmaster of the school, Biswajit Boro mentioned that since its inception the school had to witness many pitfalls including on the academic side. However, now it is in a proper shape being able to provide good education to the students. Earlier, parents who rushed to different private schools seeking admission of their children are now returning their children to Jugal High School. Considering the significance of the academic session for both Classes IX and X amid the tough challenges caused due to the lockdown, our teachers are conducting classes of major subjects like Mathematics, Science, English and Social Science taking only five or six students in each group as a dedicated and community class in the backyard or courtyard of the students, namghar etc., maintaining the required social distancing, Biswajit Boro said. He added that keeping their students academically and physically active, home visit, village-wise academic meetings with general people, class wise guardians meeting at the interval of three months, tele-teaching (telephonic discussion with the students as and when necessary), special classes during the summer vacation, academic seminar, career counselling, science exhibition, special care for the poor and backward students etc., are being given major focus and all these have received a good feedback.

Highlighting certain activities carried out for the all-round development of the school, Boro also informed that his school is set up in 29 bighas of the land area and has a well set-up playground and its serene beauty has added to its fame. We have already planted lemon trees in three bighas of land, banana in another three bighas which will very soon start yielding fruit. The more important thing is that we never purchase vegetables for mid-day meals prepared everyday for our more than 500 students as well as for other occasions as we have our own vegetable garden where our students produce organic vegetables. Not a single occasion mentioned in the academic calendar is left to be observed in the school including sports, cultural and literary events for the psychophysical development of the students, Biswajit Boro said adding that the school that was once surrounded with weeds now wears a beautiful look only because of the systematic plantation and new boundary walls and the support poured from the teaching staff.

The A+ graded school (as per Gunotsav evaluation) has got a number of grants and projects including building grants, science laboratory, ATAL tinkering High-Tech laboratory etc., for its consistent performances in every field. Expressing his gratitude towards his 13-member co-workers team including teaching and non-teaching staff for their selfless support in this regard, he also revealed that the school which a few years back had to face criticism for unsatisfactory performance, is now able to present a good show in every HSLC final examination. He also expressed his gratitude towards the local MLA Ashok Singhal due to whom the school has got sizeable amount of funds for developmental activities.
