A puja decorator who seeks no applause

By Kabita Duarah

GUWAHATI, Oct 1 For more than a decade now, the Durga Puja celebrated at Beltola Lakhimandir has been able to leave a strong impression on the pandal hoppers for the sole reason that this puja has been highlighting the relevant issues of the times through its light, sound and decoration.

And the entire credit for the thematic variations, the technical marvel and eye catching embellishments goes to one manBhagyaram Terang, who is just a matriculate and without any technical training. But his creativity and the magic that he succeeds to showcase at the puja pandal has been mesmerizing one and all for years. He seeks no applause and does not work for recognition.

A man who is just satisfied to get an opportunity to gratify his creativity, Bhagyaram is loved for his humility and affability.

For Bhagyaram, the contemporary world with all its good and evil is the source of his themes. For the last 12 years he has been conceptualizing and implementing the themes for the Maidam Beltola Lakhimandir Sarbajanin Durgotsov Udjapan Samity in its 43rd year. As he is a man who sees the world in its realistic light, he has always been settling on themes revolving around natural calamities, corruption, mans callousness towards environment, etc.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Bhagyaram who is into business said that he has to start thinking six months before the festival and though he gets the right idea, it is also very difficult sometimes to decide on the right theme. I love to think and give shape to my ideas. Since my school days I have been involved with such kind of work and it comes naturally to me, he said observing that the State had a wide range of themes to offer with all the upheavals it has been witnessing on every aspect of life.

Though he has had no formal training, he has trained three groups so far and is eager to share his expertise with everyone interested. Conceptualizing and implementing themes is very creative and that keeps me going in life despite all the impediments I encounter, said Bhagyaram adding that the silence of the night was the opportune moment for creative thinking.
