A noble step towards women empowerment

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, March 5 - A noble step by tribal women towards women empowerment has been taken up in Jamadari village under Bhuragaon Revenue Circle, 38 kilometres away from Morigaon district headquarter.

In Jamadari village there existed an illicit business of country liquor which was eradicated by some progressive women. They availed the Agriculture department scheme and started mushroom cultivation heralding a new environment of self employment. This, in turn, helped them to fight the illicit business of country liquor.

Under the auspices of Nature Green Society an NGO of Tezpur, leading citizens of Jamadari village came out to eradicate the social evil and two women led the mission. The two leading women Kabita Bordoloi and Konmai Bordoloi took up the challenge, organized the women folk to fight the social evil as well as establish themselves through honest earnings. As such, Kabita and Konmai formed a women self help group and started mushroom cultivation in their houses. They also inspired 10 other women to start mushroom cultivation in their houses. Kabita said that every woman now earns around Rs 15,000 every two months through mushroom cultivation.

Kabita and Konmai also started wheat cultivation in 21 bighas of land and they hoped that they will benefit from it in a big way.

Anku Barman, a social activist of Nature Green Society said that mushroom cultivation is the only way out to sustain economic development in the village areas of the country. So his organisation has helped the tribal women of Jamadari village in mass cultivation of mushroom.
