A million new trees for Dibrugarh!

By OUR Bureau

DIBRUGARH, May 26 - A million new trees for the Dibrugarh district seems to be the aim of this years World Environment Day celebrations here. The district administration and the Forest Department have together chalked out a massive plantation drive for the purpose. The ten lakh saplings will be planted at various locations of Dibrugarh district, announced Deputy Commissioner, Laya Madduri.

The Forest department will plant 25,000 saplings of high value trees in the Jokai reserved forest area, south of the city. The Jokai reserved forest has lost much of its green cover over the years due to negligence in forestry maintenance. However, remedial measures are being taken up in the earnest. This 11000 square metre forest is quite small compared to the much bigger forests nearby, but is often referred to as the lungs for Dibrugarh city area. Its rejuvenation is, therefore, essential for the citizens here. Moreover, the Jokai Botanical Garden, on the southern periphery of the Jokai reserved forest, is a unique tourist attraction on its own.
