GUWAHATI, April 15 - The North Guwahati police on Wednesday apprehended nine fishermen for violating the lockdown rules and seized four country boats from their possession.

The apprehended persons are Paritosh Halder, Gani Barman, Debu Malu, Rajen Biswas, Tinku Malu, Madhu Bin, Uddhab Bin, Rajkumar Malu and Saran Halder.

Initially we received information about a boat capsize in the Brahmaputra near the Ashwaklanta temple during todays storm.

Fortunately, no such accident had taken place.

Instead, we saw nine persons fishing in the river while the storm was raging on, and apprehended them. We will register a case under the IPC and the Disaster Management Act as fishing is prohibited during lockdown, an official of the North Guwahati Police Station said.

Today, State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta also instructed the officers-in-charge of all the police stations of Guwahati to initiate strict action against lockdown violators till April 20. Mahanta said that police will assess the situation on April 20 and take the next set of action. The DGP announced that the Assam Police will soon launch a helpline number to assist senior citizens of the city during the lockdown.
