NORTH LAKHIMPUR, May 3 - Lakhimpur Police today arrested nine persons in connection with the alleged attack on the men in uniform at Pandhowa in Nowboicha on Thursday evening.

The arrested persons are Anarul Islam, Abdul, Qasem, Jahirul, Mustafa, Safiqul, Sariful, Asadul and Babul.

It may be recalled that a police team was allegedly attacked by a group of people at Pandhowa under Nowboicha Police Station in Lakhimpur on Thursday evening after they beat up some persons in a local market for violating the lockdown norms.

The police team was attacked while they were talking to the Imam of a nearby mosque to limit the congregation for prayer inside the place of worship to three persons during the ongoing lockdown.

As the police was interacting with the Imam and other worshippers of the mosque, a group of people, who were not part of the congregation for namaz inside the mosque, pelted stones on the police by taking advantage of the darkness following a power failure in the area. The Officer-in-Charge of Nowboicha Police Station Biswajeet Nath sustained injuries even as a police vehicle was damaged. The incident created a tense situation in the area with hate mongering in the social media with communal overtones. In the meantime, Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Rajveer Singh said the situation had been brought under control with full public cooperation and urged the people to strictly adhere to lockdown rules by not gathering at the places of worship.
