87.29 % voter turnout in Goalpara district

GOALPARA, April 23 - Elections passed off peacefully recording a high voting percentage of 87.29% at 5 pm in the district in the third and final phase of the Lok Sabha polls in the State. Polling began from 7 am today in all the 946 polling stations in the district.

Brisk polling was reported in the morning hours as enthusiastic voters turned up in large numbers for both the 4-Dhubri and 7-Guwahati HPCs respectively as polling remained steady in the first three hours. The polling percentage remained consistent in all the 4 LACs as 36-Dudhnoi (ST) LAC under 7-Guwahati HPC recorded 85.12% while 37-Goalpara (East), 38- Goalpara (West) and 39-Jaleswar LAC under 4-Dhubri HPC recorded 86.63%, 89.78% and 88.34% at 7 pm respectively. But official sources said that the overall percentage is likely to go up further.

A triangular contest between Abu Taher Bepari (INC), Zabed Islam (AGP) and Badruddin Ajmal (AIUDF ) is on the cards for the 4-Dhubri HPC while a straight fight between Bobbeeta Sharma (INC) and Queen Oha (BJP) is expected for 7-Guwahati-HPC.

The entire poll process was smooth as no case of EVM problem was reported in the district. The weather was also clear and bright which prompted many voters to come out in large numbers in the morning hours.
