82nd Barpeta Raas festival from today

BARPETA, Nov 10 - The 82nd Panchagram Raas Mahotsav will be celebrated at Baniyakuchi in Barpeta district with a week-long programme starting November 11.

The celebration committee headed by its president Rupdhan Deka and secretary Utpal Goswami have finalised details of the programmes to be performed during the week.

The programme will begin with the hoisting of the insigne by Rupdhan Deka, president of the celebration committee at 8 am on November 11, followed by paying tribute.

Idols of Radha and Krishna will be installed on the altar at 4.30 pm followed by ceremonial lighting of lamps by several senior citizens.

After morning prayer and religious rituals, the Bhagawat will be recited on November 12. Renowned folk artiste Dhanada Pathak will inaugurate the entrance of the exhibition at 11 am. The exhibition is the main attraction of Panchagram Raas festival since its inception.

A painting competition is scheduled to be held from 11 am on November 13. An open meeting will be held in which Jayanta Malla Baruah, Chairman of Assam Tourism Development Corporation will attend as the chief guest. A mega cultural night will be inaugurated by Jakir Hussain Sikdar, MLA of Sarukshetri.

The celebration committee has made elaborate arrangements for smooth and peaceful conduct of the festival and has requested the people to extend all possible help and cooperation.
