TURA, April 29 - An eight-year-old girl child from a village under Dimapara in South Garo Hills was brutally murdered after being raped on Sunday.
The body of the victim was discovered on Monday. The alleged suspect, who was last seen taking the victim to a remote section of the village, was later apprehended before being thrashed by villagers.
The 31-year-old suspect, who was later handed over to police, was working as a handyman in the vehicle of the victims father, who was also the driver. He was last seen taking her out at about 1 pm but returned alone the same evening on Sunday.
The suspect was known to the victim and had been in the village for about a year now. He reportedly belongs to nearby Chaipani village under Dalu in West Garo Hills.
We suspect he took her to a desolate part of the village by the river where he allegedly raped and then murdered the victim. The suspect has been in the village for about a year and knew the victim very well. We are absolutely shocked by what happened, said one of the villagers.
The villagers stated that the girl was taken to one of the remote corners of the village which had no houses and only one shop at the end.
This is absolutely condemnable and the perpetrator of the crime needs to be given the strictest punishment possible. We will ourselves push for no leniency to be shown to the culprit, said Achik Youth Council president Silning D Sangma.
Confirming the incident, South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma said that the accused was handed over to police and a post mortem was conducted on the victims body at the Baghmara Civil Hospital. An investigation is on, he said.
