By Biplab Kr Dey

TURA, March 11 - Signaling possibly the end of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in Meghalaya, eight remaining cadres of the outfit today surrendered to the Church in East Garo Hills (EGH) along with arms and ammunition.

The eight cadres who surrendered today have been identified as Klubirth Sangma (Keke), CHonbirth Ch Marak, Rahul S Sangma (Nikam), Sujit G Momin (Roben), Hendison M Sangma (Newak), Barningstone S Sangma (William), Tangkam Ch Momin (Bilwat) and Pinbil Ch Marak (Churik).

The cadres surrendered at Akelgre village, about 10 kms from Williamnagar, in front of Church elders, paving the way for an official surrender tomorrow.

The cadres also surrendered two AK 56 rifles, one SMG, one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, two revolvers, two wireless sets, etc., while also depositing a huge cache of ammunition.

EGH SP, Ringrang TG Momin stated that the cadres had got in touch with the police leading to their surrender today. Momin said that the group was with Sohan D Shira during the encounter in which the outfits leader was killed.

The GNLA cadres, according to sources, had been disillusioned after the killing of their chief, Sohan D Shira, and decided to come overboard. An official surrender ceremony is set to be held at police headquarters at Shillong tomorrow and is likely to see the presence of the new Home Minister James Sangma.

Sohan was killed in a police encounter near Dobu village on February 24, just prior to voting in the just concluded elections. His death came six days after the murder of NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma and four others. They died in an IED blast allegedly triggered by GNLA at the behest of its now deceased commander.
