GUWAHATI, June 12 - Maligaon-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) recently awarded eight staff members for showing �exceptional devotion� towards duty.
All of them were given a cash award of Rs 3,000 each along with a certificate for meritorious service by the General Manager of NFR.
The staff who were given the awards included: Kakan Sarkar, driver (goods); Amardip Kumar, assistant driver; Kuldip Sharma, junior engineer of carriage and wagon (C&W); Bakul Chandra Daimary, technician I (C&W); Jadu Nath Sarkar, technician I (C&W); Subhan Chandra Baruah, senior technician (C&W); Silu Das, technician I (C&W) and Pawan Kumar Sah, technician II (C&W).
On April 2 this year, Sarkar and Kumar were working on an empty goods train and while approaching New Coochbehar station, they noticed smoke coming out from the pantry car of the New Delhi-Guwahati Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express which was coming along another line.
They immediately showed the �Red Hand� signal to the driver and the assistant driver of the Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express, which was subsequently stopped immediately and the fire in the train was extinguished, thus averting what could have been a major disaster.
On April 14, Sharma, Daimary and Sarkar were supervising some work at the New Bongaigaon station when they noticed smoke coming out from a coach of the New Delhi-Silchar Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express.
They immediately checked and found that both trolleys of the coach were in brake binding condition and the brake beam pin of the coach was found lacking. They immediately released the brake binding and rectified the brake beam, thus averting a probable mishap.
On April 15, while performing some work at the Mariani station, Baruah and Das detected some defect in the axle box wing and primary spring of a coach of the Amritsar-Dibrugarh Express. They immediately informed the on-duty station manager and the coach was detached.
That same day, Sah, while undertaking some examination duty at Katihar, detected that the inner and outer coil spring in the rear trolley of a goods train�s wagon was missing.
He immediately informed the on-day senior section engineer of C&W, Katihar. The wagon was checked, found unsafe and detached.
