SHILLONG, April 24 After days of intense politicking, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma can now shift focus on running the affairs of the State with the completion of his Cabinet team today.
Eight of Sangmas remaining Cabinet colleagues were sworn in by Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary at the Raj Bhavan here this afternoon.
Those sworn in as Ministers were Rowell Lyngdoh (Deputy Chief Minister), Ampareen Lyngdoh, Founder Strong Cajee, Frankenstein W Momin, Prestone Tynsong, HDR Lyngdoh, Augustine D Marak and Roytre C Laloo. Tuesday last, Sangma, Bindo M Lanong, JA Lyngdoh and Abu Taher Mondol were sworn in.
With todays swearing in, the 12-member Cabinet composition of the Meghalaya United Alliance (MPA) coalition government is complete.
However, the Cabinet formation has come with surprises. First time Congress MLA, Cajee from Mawlai constituency, got a berth.
Six ministers Cajee, Tynsong, Ampareen, HDR Lyngdoh, Bindo Lanong and JA Lyngdoh would represent East Khasi Hills district.
South Garo Hills, one of the most backward districts of India, has none.
West Garo Hills district has three representatives Mukul Sangma, Abu Taher Mondol and Augustine Marak. West Khasi Hills, East Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills are represented by Rowell Lyngdoh, Frankenstein W Momin and Roytre C Laloo respectively.
DD Lapang as Chief Government adviser with the rank and status of a Chief Minister adequately represents Ri-Bhoi district.
Meanwhile, prominent amongst those who missed out on a Cabinet berth were senior Congressman Sayeedullah Nongrum and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement Party president, Paul Lyngdoh.
With an obvious reference on those who missed out, Sangma said: I strongly believe that every legislator will have avenues to deliver and contribute towards the States development.
He added that there would be 17 Parliamentary Secretaries to assist the Ministers and they would be sworn in next Tuesday.
Further Sangma went back on his decision to de-notify political appointees. A final decision on the matter (political appointments) would be taken after discussion with coalition partners, he added.
The State now has two Chief Ministers in Sangma and Lapang and two Deputy Chief Ministers, Lanong and Rowell Lyngdoh.
Donkupar Roy and JD Rymbai might join the rank and status of Sangma and Lapang if the political appointments are not de-notified and then State would continue to have four Chief Ministers.
