8 MLAs fail to ensure Handiques victory

By Correspondent

JORHAT, May 18 The result of the Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency has reflected on the performance of eight sitting Congress MLAs under the HPC, who failed to garner adequate support for the party candidate, Bijoy Krishna Handique. Sivasagar, Jorhat, Sonari, Thowra, Nazira, Teok, Mariani and Mahmora LACs are considered Congress bastions.

On Friday, Handique suffered his first-ever defeat in Jorhat, which has apparently lowered the morale of Congress workers and supporters across the constituency. They said that the result was unexpected.

Though the Modi wave reportedly swept across the constituency, Handique had got the majority of votes in Titabor and Amguri Assembly constituencies. However, the other eight Congress-dominated constituencies failed to ensure his victory. In Titabor, the Congress got 44,360 votes, while the BJP secured 39,773. In Amguri, Handique bagged 33,971 votes, while BJP nominee Kamakhya Tasa got 24,573 votes. In both these constituencies, the Congress candidate got 4,587 and 9,398 more votes than the BJP.

According to Amguri MLA Anjan Dutta, his party workers have maintained organisational discipline, which yielded the expected result in favour of the Congress. Proper discipline matters in poll results, he added. Dutta said that introspection has become the need of the hour for the Congress for its revival.

However, in Sivasagar, Nazira, Thowra, Jorhat and Sonari, Tasa got 7,438, 2,868, 10,108, 25,099 and 29,224 more votes respectively than the Congress candidate. In Mariani, Teok and Mahmora also, the BJP got 16,238, 8,821 and 16,508 more votes respectively than the Congress.
