GUWAHATI, May 15 - At least eight persons including two SSB personnel were injured in a grenade blast in front of Guwahati Central mall on the RG Baruah Road at around 7.55 pm today. The condition of one civilian, who was injured in the grenade attack, is stated to be critical.

A picket of Assam Police and SSB personnel was stationed in the location since 5 pm today and it is suspected that militants hurled the grenade from a motorcycle. Six civilians and two SSB personnel, who were injured in the incident, were rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. The condition of a pop corn vendor is stated to be critical.

The blast created a small crater on the road and blood stains of the injured persons could be seen on the pavement near the incident. The site was immediately cordoned off and police started investigation into the incident. A massive traffic jam was also witnessed on the RG Baruah Road after the incident.

Police sources said that there was an alert that militants might try to target Guwahati city to make their presence felt. But the possible location of the attack could not be specified.

Though the identity of the militants involved in the attack is yet to be ascertained, the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) has claimed the responsibility for it. ULFA(I) commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah called up this newspaper and claimed that it was an attack on Central forces.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has strongly condemned the attack and directed the Director General of Police to take immediate steps to nab the culprits involved.
