8 held for fraudulent sale of milk products

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - The New Guwahati Government Railway Police (GRP) in the past 48 hours apprehended eight persons from different parts of the city on charges of alleged involvement in stealing a huge quantity of packaged milk products.

Ranjay Kumar Purbey, 38; Maidul Haque, 20; Mokminul Islam, 31; Maminul Haque, 25; Mohan Shah, 48; Rahijul Hussain, 29; Kamlesh Kumar, 48 and Kailash Agarwal, 35; were picked up after police recovered a missing truck from Jalukbari area on Saturday night.

The operation was carried out based on a complaint filed by Bijay Shah, owner of the truck. The truck had gone missing after loading packaged milk products at BG Yard in Bamunimaidam here on October 4.

�After recovering the truck we first apprehended Maidul Haque, the handyman of the truck. From him, we came to know that he and the driver had sold all the milk products in different parts of Guwahati with the help of some middlemen. By late Sunday night we were able to apprehend altogether eight persons in connection with the case. But the driver of the truck is still absconding,� Tapan Medhi, in-charge of New Guwahati GRP Outpost said.

During the operation, the GRP seized altogether 1,277 packets of milk products from Hatigaon, Noonmati, Satgaon and Bhangagarh areas of the city.

�As per record altogether 1,650 packets of milk products worth Rs 6.20 lakh were loaded onto the truck. But some of those packets have already been sold in retail market,� a GRP official said.
